TRL, TTFN
That’s Total Request Live, Ta Ta For Now - Total Request Live (aka TRL to all us Gen-Yers), MTV’s daily afternoon count-down program is officially on its way out the door. The show premiered September 14, 1998. It was filmed in that cool little room in Times Square, celebrities came and went, tweens screamed and cried, and somewhere in the middle they played some music videos.
This news comes according to the show’s executive producer Dave Sirulnick. Via an article on CNN.com he says:
“We want to close this era of ‘TRL’ in a big celebratory way, and 10 is a great number,” Sirulnick said. “And 10 is the number that ‘TRL’ counted down every single day for 10 years, and we hit this 10th (anniversary) and we thought, ‘You know what? This feels like the right time and let’s celebrate it and let’s reward it. And let’s let it have a little bit of a rest for a minute.’ Let it catch its breath! Been working hard — for 10 years!”
Not only has TRL been counting down music videos- errr well, short clips of music videos- for the past 10 years, they’ve also been counting down exactly how far into oblivion a TV show can plummit. With this announcement, the world may never know. On a side note, apparently, Eminem had something to say on the subject as well:
“I’m going to miss ‘TRL.’ … Where else will I be able to start feuds, defend my honor vigorously and act like an angry teenager on national TV? Oh wait … The VMAs!”
Anyway, to pay homage to my afterschool guilty pleasure of so many years, how about we count down the Top 10 TRL Moments!
Well, I can’t think of 10, so I’ll just post my most memorable.
First thing that comes to mind is Tom Green and Lonely Swedish (The Bum Bum Song).
Mariah Carey has a few good ones. This is her singing in the shower, naked, on the phone with Carson.
Here’s her famous breakdown.
And of course, Jesse Camp. This guy was bonkers.
Finally, somewhere out there in the world wide web is a picture of Carson Daly when he first began TRL. He had a nose piercing and it was hilarious; but for the life of me, I can’t find it. Who can help me out?
Let’s take this time to reflect on 10 great years of declining entertainment. What’s you favorite/most memorable moment from TRL?
