Album Review: Devin The Dude – Landing Gear
Weed. Wine. Women. That’s what I think of when I hear the name Devin the Dude. Devin brings out the lighter side of hip-hop with his comedic and original subject matter, yet he has been under the radar due to his lack of publicity and radio play.
He has continued to develop the genre of comedic hip-hop just like other rappers such as Slick Rick and The Pharcyde have done.
With his new album Landing Gear Devin continues to make listeners laugh while still touching on a few serious topics. In the first single “I Cant Make It Home” Devin discusses how he regrets buying too many expensive drinks and how he can’t talk his way out of going to jail when he was pulled over. This is classic Devin as he is also left hanging by yet another woman, this time who won’t post bail.
Another one of my favorite songs on the album is “El Grande Nalgas” aka the big butt. Devin’s Mexican booty anthem showcases his Spanish speaking skills, or lack there of. He goes on to say “so mannish/the thought that goes and stops inside my head/my Spanish is so bad I don’t know what the fuck I said.” The mix of hip-hop and a little Salsa is a great combination and creates a chilling beat.
Devin continues to have great production and he’s got “that boom” which Devin fans have come to love. In tracks such as “In My Draws,” “Let Me Know It’s Real,” “Me, You,” and “Your Kinda Love” he discusses how he’s a veteran in the game yet still sticks to his weed and women basis. Devin also does a song with Snoop Dogg titled “I Don’t Chase ‘Em” which is just another song about showing them hoes no love.
With Landing Gear Devin continues with his comedic weed smoking, “women adoring” antics. The production value and lyrics combined put this album at a level equal to his past albums, which I must say is pretty high.
