Cover of the Week: “Only The Good Die Young”
Just in case you have a severe case of ADHD and need your pop songs to be played a little faster and end a little quicker, here is the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes version of Billy Joel’s classic “Only The Good Die Young.”
What should happen is a “Best Cover Band That Ever Existed” award that should go to Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. In the unfortunate event that you have not yet heard of them, they are essentially a bunch of assholes that take pop songs from the past 50 years or so and make them into pop-punk songs. A brilliant idea. This was recorded in the 90′s as a b-side to their first full length album, Have A Ball, and was then released on Punk-O-Rama, Vol. 2, and again in 2008 on the album Have Another Ball, which is just b-sides from their first release. What a rich history. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are also essentially a Fat Wreck Chords all-star lineup (the guy from the Foo Fighters used to be in the band No Use For A Name):
Vocals – Spike Slawson from Swingin’ Utters
Guitar – Joey Cape from Lagwagon
Guitar – Chris Shiflett from the Foo Fighters
Bass – Fat Mike from NOFX
Drums – Dave Raun from Lagwagon
I hope you thoroughly enjoyed this punk rock/pop-punk lesson of the day. Tell all your friends about it.
