No sophomore slump for Super Mash Bros.

Super Mash Bros, self-proclaimed as “Girl Talk’s hot cousin,” recently released their second album, ‘All About the Scrilions.’

I’ve always (well, since I heard of them about 6 months ago) been a fan of Super Mash Bros. In February, I wrote about their first album, ‘Fuck Bitches. Get Euros.’ And like the debut, Bros’ sophomore album has it all covered: the Beatles, classic rock, motown, 80s guilty pleasures, hip hop, 90s alt rock, pop, house…the list goes on and on. If you ask me, they’re better than GT, but what do you think? Download ‘Scrilions’ for FREE here.

The flow is solid. The album plays as one track. And most importantly, the timing is great. Nearly every other mashup artist I’ve heard doesn’t quite have it right–clips are either too short and tease me (as is the case with Girl Talk, in my opinion); or, more often, the mash goes too long, forcing two songs together for a painful and boring 2,3, or 4 minute catastrophe. While ‘All About the Scrillions’ lacks the “Whoa this is cool and new” factor of ‘Fuck Bitches. Get Euros,’ it’s still a solid and fun experience. The whole album is only 32 minutes long, so at the very worst, at least you’ve got a great playlist for a party that 99% of your friends haven’t heard before.

Some tracks of note: Adler Girl Pt. II (John Mayer, Hey Baby, 99 Problems, Britney), Still Bleeding (Jock Jams, Madonna – Holiday/Fergie – Glamorous, Katy Perry – I Kissed a girl/Daft Punk – Television Rules the Nation), Living the Dream (Viva la Vida, Twista, Kanye, Eleanor Rigby/Pop Lock n Drop It)

  1. I have to disagree with the very title of this post. This effort doesn’t come close to Fuck Bitches Get Euros. The album seems rushed, trying to get themselves more hype as soon as possible. They seem like great guys who are very much in touch with their fans (Dick even thanked us when we discussed them a while ago!), and I don’t think the album is “weak”, but some extra polish and better song selection / transitions would have suited them well.

But hey, my opinion is just that. My opinion. I could very well be way off-target ;)

  2. I definitely see where you’re coming from, Lee. The album isn’t quite as good as their first, but is it a flop? Not at all. Part of the reason I liked the first album so much was because it was so original; all mashup artists struggle to keep that freshness across albums because they’re basically doing the same thing on every project. I’ve listened to the album 3 or 4 times so far, and I’ve enjoyed it more each time. So give it another run-through and you’ll find some very redeeming qualities!
