GirlTalk Comes to College Park
A freshman in a leprechaun hat and beard danced alongside a junior adorned with glow sticks. All the while masked bandits, covered head-to-toe in black, launched streams of toilet paper from make shift leaf-blowers into the capacity crowd. Girl Talk had come to College Park.
Greg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk, is the controversial DJ who has risen to fame on the efforts of his “mash-up” albums. These albums, which feature samples of several popular songs re-mixed together to form a new song altogether, have become the unmistakable dance anthems for a generation of college-aged students.
“Girl Talk is the definition of how f-cked up the U.S. music industry is with copyrighting” said Igor Federovskiy, a senior at the University of Maryland.
“He brings together the best parts of the best songs” said freshmen Nicky Carver and Alix Head “he’s one of best performers out there right now, but he’s still so incredibly down to earth.”
Gillis declined to comment on the show, but has been quoted as saying that he prefers to play to the energetic college crowds.
“He’s young and he knows what college kids want to hear” explained Leor Gold, the Musical Arts Director for SEE [Student Entertainment Events]
The University of Maryland crowd certainly did not disappoint, as they filled Cole Field House nearly to capacity and fully embraced Girl Talk’s rambunctious energy. Twenty pre-approved students were allowed to dance alongside Girl Talk on stage.
Mary Nachimson, was one of those lucky twenty.
“Girl Talk had an amazing stage presence. He’s a great performer even when I accidentally stepped on his foot and he didn’t care at all, I apologized and he gave me a kiss” said Nachimson “he was so cool about letting people close to him.”
The show was electric. Drenched in sweat, the DJ was at once a performer and fan. He switched from blasting his famous songs like the “Thunderstruck/We Ready” remix to abandoning his computer altogether in favor of dancing with the students on stage. In one of the best shows to come the University of Maryland, the infamous Girl Talk left a lasting impression on the rowdy College Park fans.
