MMBS Speaker Event: Philip Chorney
Philip Chorney could be called the Renaissance Man of the Maryland music industry. He manages original acts (like the Mad Sweet Pangs), manages novelty acts (clowns!), owns and runs the MeeMaw Booking and Entertainment Company, and manages the production of the RamJam Festival. Just last night, he spoke to a group of Maryland Music Business Society members about a variety of topics regarding the music scene, more specifically artist management.
Chorney’s career slowly started to gain momentum during his college years at the University of Delaware, where he befriended the members of a local jam/funk/rock band, the Mad-Sweet Pangs. Chorney’s career spawned from the moment he decided to manage this tight-knit group of musicians. Once he graduated in 2006, he sat down with the band, established goals, and plowed a path to success. Along the way, he has been taking advantage at anything that gets thrown his way.
He gave the attendees of the event sound advice about managing bands, with a no-bull approach. Chorney established two MUST DO actions to do when managing a band: (1) protect your band’s rights by incorporating and (2) having integrity when making decisions about the band. He discussed pretty much everything that goes into managing a band, including booking, touring, marketing, promoting, recording, performing, and financing. A great speaker for anyone who’s managing or planning to manage an artist.
