Calling All Crows: State Radio Performs at 9:30 Club

State Radio performed at the 9:30 Club in DC on Friday (Feb 26th) and Saturday (Feb 27th), the second of which I attended for free. Yes, that’s right. Before and after the show, I tabled for the band’s volunteer organization, Calling All Crows, which was started by lead singer Chad Urmston. Calling All Crows aims to promote human rights and takes action by participating in local community service activities before every show and raising money towards helping women in Sudan. The organization is a really honorable endeavor that you can easily sign up for on the website.

The show was amazing. Chad (singer/ guitar), Chuck (bass), and Mike ‘Mad Dog’ (drums) were full of energy and pleased the enthusiastic fans. They played some jams from their new album Let It Go (2009), including “Arsenic & Clover”, “Calling All Crows”, “Let it Go”, and “Mansin Humanity”. The set list also included my personal favorites, “Rushian” and “Indian Moon,”  as well as concert-staples “Right Me Up,” “Calvado’s Chopper,” and “The Waitress.”

The encore was by far the most entertaining part of the show. The band got me nervous when they took a while to come back out, but it was well worth the anticipation when they ran back on stage in DRESSES! I could not stop laughing as I sang along to “Olli Olli” and experienced the sight of State Radio’s bare legs! Now that’s an attractive visual.

The best part of my night was yet to come. After the show, Chad came out to chat with fans, and I managed to snag a picture with him. In the eighty-five seconds I conversed with him, I told him that I already have my tickets for his show this summer in New York with John Butler.

When I was leaving he said, “see you in Central Park!”

I can’t wait.

  1. That sounds amazing.I wish I could have gone! I think it is so great the way State Radio has continued to work for human rights in the way that Dispatch did with their Dispatch: Zimbabwe initiative. Those are the things that make me want to listen to bands more. And as for Central Park, that venue will just make the music that much better. Have an awesome time. <3 you Hannnaa
